Introducing the iPod into the Classroom:
"The iPod allows you to integrate audio seamlessly into the curriculum. Every class, you can use music to set the stage, immediately jump to any point in an audio book, or play a famous speech accessed from the Library of Congress. Video, audio, and images can be loaded on the iPod and provide an excellent manner for bringing a student who missed a day up to speed. Or perhaps a student is struggling with a concept; they can watch a video a number of times on the iPod to fully understand the content. ELL students struggling with vocabulary can have flash cards on [the iPod] to see an image, hear a word used in a sentence, and read the word in text—and do it as many times as they need to understand it." Uses In Schools: iPod's uses in the schools can vary depending on the curriculum. Each subject area alters the way the iPod will be intergrated into the classeroom depending upon the lesson plan. Some examples of the subject areas that are using the iPod are:


Classroom teachers incorporate iPod by copying math songs from iTunes for the children to take home. Uploading onto the iPod allow the children to continue their learning even after they leave the classroom. The songs have a variety of rhythms and words to appeal to each student (Thompson, 2005).


The iPod makes the science lessons come to life. So far they have been successful and the learning process has been more entertaining. For example in one fifth grade class a teacher sings a song with her students about solids, liquids, and gases. By recording the song onto the iPod it allows them to listen to the song whenever they need it to be reinforced.

iPods have been incorporated into the multilingual classrooms. They are incorporated to help bilingual students with limited English ability sharpen their vocabulary and grammar by singing along to popular songs. This technique has been helpful to many students that are learning English as a second language. iPods are also used in foreign language classes where students already know English. iPod’s can also benefit english speaking students and help their language skills. It allows students learn and practice letter sounds. Students’ use an iPod and a voice recorder to record the sounds the letters make to hear the sounds made by different letters. The teacher can update the iPod with more sounds and words as the children progress through the year (Becker, 2005).

Podcasting in Colleges:
Podcasting allows the instructor to record a lecture or presentation as it is given. Podcasting is a technology that allows organizations and individuals to deliver multimedia content to an audience on a regular basis with little or no effort on the part of the user. The user subscribes to a podcast feed and the content is downloaded onto the computer when a new podcast is available. The podcast is played through iTunes or synchronized with the iPod and played through it and d
ownloading videos to watch for a class to sending a podcast of frequently asked questions to students in a class. This article
may refer to a college but these things can come in handy in the primary and secondary levels of education as well. Teachers can send out downloadable podcasts for parents to listen to and to keep them informed about what their children are learning about in school.

Final Thoughts:

There are numerous ways for teachers to use the iPod. Many websites list examples of lesson plans along with the positive results of using iPods in the classroom.
